The Garage Theatre’s Safe Space & Impact Statement
The Garage Theatre is a collaborative ensemble that strives to create a diverse body of work by taking artistic risks while uncovering social & human truths. We cannot do so without also acknowledging & honoring the diversity in the people who come together to create and witness it. We are dedicated to providing access to independent, non-commercial theatre to audiences of all ages, genders, orientations, cultures, & backgrounds. We are proud to provide that same accessibility and welcoming space to new & returning company members, production teams, performers, et al.
We unequivocally denounce harm against any and all marginalized groups both inside and outside of our performance space. With that said, we acknowledge our failure to be fully cognizant of doing so in years past. We understand that Intent does not equal Impact, and we must take ownership of our Impact, past, present, and future.
In our efforts toward collective accountability, we have taken the pledge to be a certified Safe Space through the City of Long Beach’s Safe Space Alliance and are dedicated to learning how we can be better allies for our LGBTQ+ community. We proudly sponsor company members to attend courses in becoming consent-forward artists and encourage all members to attend anti-bias training. Our work toward diversity, inclusion, equity and access will be ongoing and imperfect. Mistakes will be made as we navigate this living document, correcting ourselves with grace and learning from any missteps along the way.
We at The Garage believe that every person who walks through our door provides a gorgeously unique perspective and contribution to the work we create and we move to honor those perspectives daily. We are ever evolving to become the best versions of ourselves not only as a company, but as individuals for the greater community we serve.
